This is a great compilation of all the MST Hour Host Segments we could find, in the very best condition we could find them in, all placed lovingly onto 2 DVDs!
This has been a long-term project, since these have been somewhat hard to track down for some reason, but now it's time to lay some tracks and call this one DONE! Special thanks to Tom Noel at Tom's MST3K Temple for tracking down and providing what are probably the best source tapes of this material to be found!
In case you weren't aware, in 1993, 30 episodes of MST3K were syndicated as one-hour shows (part one and part two of each episode). These featured Mike Nelson as host in his brilliant Jack Perkins role, introducing and closing each show (for a total of four segments per episode). Taken together, these segments are as funny as any of the regular host segments were, despite being essentially a "one-man-show". Even the credits will have you rolling, as you observe the visual gags unfold "off-camera".
NOTE: If you have any of the missing segments, REWARDS AWAIT YOU! See below.
Disc One Includes segments from Season 3 episodes:
Cave Dwellers
Gamera*
Pod People
Time of the Apes*

Some CheepThoughts:
What a project! I plowed through the first disc just fine, but found that I got so burnt out on it, it was hard to start the second one. Those credits are LONG and the closing song is so repetitive that it drills into your brain like a malevolent (if gentle-sounding) demon after 10 + hours of hearing it. I finally decided to buckle down and get disc 2 done, but I had a slight migraine after working on it for only a couple hours - seriously! Another half a pot of coffee and 800mg of Ibuprofen later (and after a small break, lying down in the dark with ice cubes on my eyes) I finally finished.
One of the reasons I put this project off for so long was that I knew it would require pretty intensive editing. (The other reason was needing to collect the best known copies of the segs - these are likely the best in circulation.) It was mostly just comparing all the disparate pieces and finding the best ones, cutting/pasting each one, splicing when repairs were needed (fortunately, only a few - and they consisted of finishing the credits or the opening chords for an otherwise A+ segment), in otherwords, no big deal. Well, it's done now and we can all breath easier.
I decided to go with two discs. Yes, the segs could have all fit on one, but any time you apply DVD compression for anything over 90 mins, you start to notice artifacts. I split them at the Season 3/4 division, which was logical and conveniently near the middle of the whole group as well.
I always liked Mike as Jack Perkins and have felt it to be one of his best roles. Even after doing this project, I still enjoy the absurdity of this character, his bent sense of innocence and slighty evil view of normalcy. I feel this material is as good as Monty Python for many of the same reasons. If only I could get that theme song out of my head...
